Transportation

Getting from the airport to town and exploring the city

The Louis Armstrong International Airport
Louis Armstrong International Airport is located in Kenner, 21 miles northwest of downtown New Orleans. To get to your hotel, we recommend taking a taxi, the airport shuttle or renting a car.

Taxi Cabs
A cab ride costs $24.00 from the airport to the Central Business District (CBD) for one person and $10.00 (per passenger) for three or more passengers. Pick-up is on the lower level, outside the baggage claim area. There may be an additional charge for extra baggage.

Shuttle service
Shuttle service is available from the airport to the hotels in the CBD for $10.00 (one-way, per person). Three bags per person.

Automobile Rental
There are 5 rental agencies with offices on the lower level of the airport. Check with each company for rates.

Don’t consider driving in New Orleans as traffic problems of all kinds are rife, and parking rules are tight and strictly enforced.

New Orleans Etiquette

Greeting someone in New Orleans

Most people address each other by their first names and greet each other with a handshake. On some occasions, such as business meetings and formal functions, it is expected to use a person's title and last name.

Tipping advice
Throughout America tipping is more or less compulsory. In restaurants waiters expect around 10-20%, as do taxi drivers and hairdressers, while porters and bellboys anticipate around 1 USD or 2 USD per piece of luggage. You are not expected to tip in fast-food restaurants or cinemas.

New Orleans dress code
Dress code in New Orleans is tailored to the climate. In the summer months, formal clothing should be smart but light - favour especially cotton and natural fabrics to help counter the hot and humid conditions. Winter clothing is the standard business suit and tie, for example.

Local Customs
The arts are well represented in New Orleans, the ‘City of Jazz,’ and in character with its lively nature, the city enforces no legal closing times for clubs or bars.
